Bike repairs business owner Mark Hughes kindly shares his inspiring business start-up story with us. During the height of lockdown, Mark was made redundant from his job as Sales Manager, he quickly found a job as a temporary Sainsbury's delivery driver to support his family. During Mark's one hour of exercise on his day off, he bumped into a friend who said he couldn't get his bike fixed anywhere. Mark offered to fix his bike and once it was returned he was delighted with the level of service and suggested that he should set up his own business servicing and repairing bikes. Throughout his life, Mark has had a huge interest in cycling as a sport and competed in a range of biking events. Mark decided to take a bike mechanic qualification and set up his own business Velo28 Bike servicing and repairs.
For his dream business to be a reality, Mark needed space for storing and repairing his bikes, so he came to GCS Leisure Buildings to design his own log cabin. Mark discussed the options with our lead designer, his goal was to create a relaxing place where his family could gather and a storage solution to store his bikes and necessary equipment to be able to run his business. Marks opted for a 3.5m x 2m Woodpro log cabin with side storage finished in light grey with white windows and doors giving it a fresh and modern appeal.
Mark isn't any ordinary bike mechanic and his passion for the sport has been his motivation from the beginning and continues to drive him today. Mark's business has thrived as more and more people work to reduce their carbon footprint and improve their fitness levels through cycling. To support people with cycling in his local area, as part of a team, Mark helped launch the Ashington charity 'Cycling for everyone'. It is a community-funded project that involves Bikeability instructors and mechanics who provide new and returning cyclists with safe and confident cycling instruction.
